Punchestown Festival: Mullins duo Chacun Pour Soi and Allaho set to clash at the Festival

Stablemates Allaho and Chacun Pour Soi both trained by Willie Mullins, will go head to head for the William Hill Champion Chase at the upcoming Punchestown Festival.

In the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham last month, Allaho produced a superb win while Chacun Pour Soi could finish only third, bidding to provide Willie Mullins with an elusive first victory in the Queen Mother Champion Chase the previous afternoon.

Allaho will be tried over the two miles in the feature event next Tuesday on the opening day of the Festival and Mullins will try to find out whether he could be a legitimate contender for the Champion Chase at Cheltenham next season.

“The William Hill Champion Chase could be a good race,” said the champion trainer.

“At the moment I’m looking at the race for Allaho. I’d just like to see what he can do over two miles – he jumps so efficiently and so well, that is where my head is at at the moment.

“I think this is the natural race for Chacun Pour Soi. There will be plenty of pace on and Cilaos Emery will probably go there as well, so we will be well represented in the race.”

The Festival is the end-of-season showpiece at Punchestown in County Kildare, where Willie Mullins will again be preparing a powerful team.

Appreciate It, who will bid to follow up his brilliant win in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham with victory in the eCOMM Merchant Solutions Champion Novice Hurdle, will also compete on the opening day.

Preparing for the race, Mullins said: “Appreciate It will definitely go, Blue Lord is in there as well and Echoes In Rain is interesting.

“She will probably go for the mares’ race, but her performance in Fairyhouse was very good and she is in the Champion Novice Hurdle on Tuesday getting a nice fillies allowance, so we’ll see.”

The Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase on the Tuesday, will see a ‘Clash of the Titans’ when the Mullins-trained Monkfish, will battle it out with Henry de Bromhead’s Envoi Allen.

Monkfish was made to work a little harder than many expected when stretching his unbeaten record over fences to four in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham, but ultimately got the job done.

“Monkfish didn’t jump with the same flair that he jumped (with previously) and he didn’t gallop with the same flair (at Cheltenham), but he’ll go for the three-mile race on Tuesday,” Mullins confirmed.

The Closutton handler expects Monkfish to be joined by at least a couple of stable companions, adding: “Colreevy has been covered by Walk In The Park and she will go. That will probably be her last run.

“The Flynns (owners) are out-and-out breeders and she is a fantastic looking mare and hopefully she’ll be lucky.

“From winning at Christmas over two miles, I think I’m going to put Franco De Port in over three miles and that will tell us where we are going next year.

“We’ll have a good hand in that race.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the Punchestown Festival, Mullins is looking forward to seeing Al Boum Photo and Kemboy renew rivalry in Wednesday’s Ladbrokes Gold Cup.

Ruby Walsh famously retired on Kemboy when getting the better of his dual Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning stablemate Al Boum Photo in the last running of the day two feature in 2019.

Cheltenham one-two Sir Gerhard and Kilcruit will lead the Mullins team in Wednesday’s ITM – Supporting Irish Store Sales Champion Bumper, while Sharjah, James Du Berlais, Klassical Dream and Saldier are potential runners in the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle on Friday.

Mullins also confirmed Energumene, who missed the Arkle at Cheltenham due to a late setback, is on course to return in the Ryanair Novice Chase on Thursday.

“Punchestown is what we always look forward to. There is huge prize money, fantastic racing, they always produce great ground and just the amphitheatre of Punchestown itself,” Mullins added.

“I often think there is no racetrack like it in the world when you see it laid out for five days racing. It’s just amazing and the whole concept of the Punchestown Festival is huge when you see the work and preparation that goes into it.”

Thunder Moon sounding out the Qipco 2000 Guineas for Joseph O’Brien

Joseph O’Brien will be hoping the good spell of weather continues. Good ground he believes, will help his Qipco 2000 Guineas entry, Thunder Moon.

He ran out an impressive winner of the National Stakes on Irish Champions Weekend. That race was only his second outing and a race that had recent Craven victor Master Of The Seas, fourth. The Zoffany colt finished third in the Dewhurst on his final outing.

He finished behind St Mark’s Basilica and Wembley, both trained by his father Aidan O’Brien, but was in no way disgraced. Joseph O’Brien feels the faster ground will help him to turn the tables.

“He’s wintered very well. Obviously we put him away after the Dewhurst, but I was very pleased with that run. The ground went a bit slow on us and we probably weren’t drawn in the perfect position, but it was a very good run,” O’Brien told Nick Luck’s Daily Podcast.

“The plan all winter has been to go straight to the Guineas and not have a prep. He’s in good shape.

“His National Stakes win was a very good performance. It was a very messy race, but he got himself out of trouble and showed a fantastic turn of foot.

“Turn of foot and speed are probably his two attributes, he’d love a bit of firm ground as he’s a strong traveller with a turn of foot, which he showed a couple of times last season. It would be pretty important to us that the ground is good or better.”

Thunder Moon is currently fourth-favourite for the Newmarket Classic, with the two who beat him in the Dewhurst ahead of him in the betting.

“I don’t know if he’s classier (than the two who beat him in the Dewhurst), but I probably feel that we are the quickest horse,” said O’Brien.

“We travelled very well through the Dewhurst and looked the winner, but on the day there was a severe bias to the rail, we were drawn on the other side and also the ground was on the slow side so I thought it was a fantastic run.

“When we broke down the race afterwards we were very proud of his run, we’re looking forward to taking them on again on what we hope will be quicker going.

“His pedigree suggests he’ll stay further, I’m quite confident about the mile but after that I’m not sure how much further he’d go as he’s quite a pacey horse.

“I’d say Declan McDonagh is most likely to ride at Newmarket and we’ll go from there, but it hasn’t really been discussed yet. I’d imagine it will be Declan as he has a good relationship with him.”

O’Brien also has a live chance in the 1000 Guineas with Pretty Gorgeous, the Fillies’ Mile winner.

“She’s in good shape too, I’m pleased with how she’s wintered. She’s a big, powerful mare and the plan is to go straight there,” he said.

A total of 25 colts remain in the Guineas following the latest forfeit stage, a number that could be boosted should connections opt to supplement Mutasaabeq.

Home-bred by the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Shadwell Stud, the son of Invincible Spirit was a six-length winner of a conditions event on the Rowley Mile earlier this month.

Trainer Charlie Hills said: “He’s in great form after his run at Newmarket, he didn’t lose much weight and seems to have taken the race very well.

“We haven’t spoken (about supplementing yet), it’s something we probably need to talk about for the rest of the week and decide by the end of the week really.

“We’ll certainly see him in Pattern company next time, but I’m not sure where yet – we’ll discuss it with the family and go from there.”

Sadly, Amateur jockey Lorna Brooke passed away following a fall at Taunton last week

Amateur rider Lorna Brooke died in hospital on Sunday following a fall at Taunton earlier this month, the Injured Jockeys Fund has announced.

Brooke was riding Orchestrated for her mother, Susan Brooke, when falling at the third fence in the Pontispool Equine Sports Centre Handicap Chase on 8 April.

Racing was delayed by more than hour as she was treated on track, before being transferred into an air ambulance.

A statement issued by the IJF on Friday said Brooke was in a “critical, but stable condition” in intensive care at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, and had been placed in an induced coma due to “various complications” during the week.

However, a further statement released on Monday confirmed she had died.

The statement read: “It is with deep sadness that we have to share the tragic news that Lorna Brooke passed away yesterday.

“Her family thank everyone for their kindness in the last few weeks, particularly the staff at Southmead Hospital who were so professional.

“They will be having a private funeral and will hold a celebration of Lorna’s life once Covid restrictions allow.”

Lorna Brooke pictured after winning at Fairyhouse in 2015

Brooke, 37, who rode as a 7lb-claiming amateur, enjoyed a high-profile success when winning the inaugural Ladies Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse on Moonlone Lane for Paul Stafford in 2015.

A 25-1 chance, Moonlone Lane had gone winless in a 26-race career up to that point, but Brooke guided him home in front, with Katie Walsh, Lizzie Kelly, Rachael Blackmore and Nina Carberry all trailing in her wake.

Moonlone Lane then won next time out at Musselburgh under Brooke.

“It’s tragic news, it really is shocking,” Stafford told Sky Sports Racing.

“When she got the fall people were very concerned, we were too and we were saying prayers, but unfortunately this has happened.

“She was a lovely person, obviously she rode that winner for us and we kept in contact over the years through social media, congratulating each other on social media when each of us had winners. It’s shocking it’s happened.”

Thinking back to the day at Fairyhouse, Stafford said: “He’d never won a race until she rode him that day, she took the bull by the horns, went on and it paid off – she gave him a fantastic ride.

“I’d never met Lorna before that, she was more or less allocated the ride, but I knew she was a capable rider. It worked out and she rode him several times again, winning at Musselburgh.

“She was over the moon that day at Fairyhouse, and her family. I met her mother at Bangor one day and she’s lovely too.

“I send my condolences to her family, my heart goes out to them.”

Brooke partnered 17 winners in Britain and Ireland since the 2001/02 season, riding largely for her mother, but also teaming up with John Groucott on a regular basis.

One of Brooke’s victories came aboard the Evan Williams-trained Dashing Doc in a lady amateurs’ handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot in 2011 – a race in which Cheltenham Festival and Grand National heroine Blackmore finished third.

Williams said: “The best way I can describe Lorna is an enthusiast. Whether it was a point-to-point in Herefordshire or riding under rules with the girls in the changing room, she was always smiling and always working.

“She was a bubbly personality and typical of so many people involved in the industry – unsung heroes who are part of the weighing room and one of us, if that makes sense. It’s what makes racing so very special.

“You’d see her and her mum Sue in Ffos Las or Taunton, they’d be doing all the work themselves. You’d often have to give her a leg-up or give her a hand to lead one up – that was their enjoyment and that was their life.

“For her to pay the ultimate price is so terribly devastating, but it was her passion.”

Reflecting on Brooke’s success board Dashing Doc 10 years ago, Williams added: “It’s strange really because the man who owned Dashing Doc was a farmer who lived next door to me called Ralph Thomas and we lost him this week.

“He was a smashing fellow and I can remember him in the paddock actually, chatting with Lorna about how they were going to bring about the downfall of this girl they’d heard about from Ireland – Rachael Blackmore!

“It’s very sobering to think that Lorna beat Rachael, who went on to such great things.

“I suppose it’s a great epitaph for what she’s done in the sport.”

The Racecourse Association said in a statement: “The Racecourse Association is deeply saddened by the tragic news of Lorna Brooke’s death as a result of injuries sustained following a fall whilst race-riding at Taunton Racecourse on Thursday, 8 April.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Lorna’s family and friends during this time.

“The RCA is in contact with Taunton Racecourse and relevant authorities, offering our support as required.

“All racecourses observed a period of silence and displayed black armbands as a mark of respect to Lorna’s memory.”

May she Rest In Peace.

Mighty Thunder collects the Scottish National in fine style

Victory in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr on Sunday went to the Lucinda Russell trained Mighty Thunder.

Lucinda Russell and her partner Peter Scudamore, train Mighty Thunder in Kinross and finished as an 8-1 chance for his latest National assignment following victory in the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh and then coming second in the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter on his last two starts.

Rounding the home turn, it looked like Sandy Thomson could saddle the first two home, with 7-1 favourite Dingo Dollar and his stablemate The Ferry Master clear at the head of affairs.

However, Mighty Thunder responded to jockey Tom Scudamore’s urgings to close the gap and reeled in Dingo Dollar on the run-in to land a popular success by three-quarters of a length.

Irish raider Mister Fogpatches beat The Ferry Master to third place.

Mighty Thunder is the first home-trained winner of Scotland’s most famous jumps race since Merigo in 2012.
